Poem by Robert Louis Stevenson from "A Child's Garden of Verses" Over the borders, a sin without pardon,   Breaking the branches and crawling below, Out through the breach in the wall of the garden,   Down by the banks of the river, we go.   Here is the mill with the humming of thunder,   Here is the weir with the wonder of foam, Here is the sluice with the race running under—   Marvelous places, though handy to home!   Sounds of the village grow stiller and stiller,   Stiller the note of the birds on the hill; Dusty and dim are the eyes of the miller,   Deaf are his ears with the moil of the mill.   Years may go by, and the wheel in the river   Wheel as it wheels for us, children, to-day, Wheel and keep roaring and foaming for ever   Long after all of the boys are away.   Home from the Indies and home from the ocean,   Heroes and soldiers we all shall come home; Still we shall find the old mill wheel in motion,   Turning and churning that river to foam.   You with the bean that I gave when we quarrelled,   I with your marble of Saturday last, Honoured and old and all gaily apparelled,   Here we shall meet and remember the past.

Around Your Tongue You made me You ate me I am you When I am I watched you When I came I hid from you All the same You were smoking by yourself Looking out a window Painting with your breath I was sleeping between your gums Slipping out your nose Around your tongue I am dead now As you Born, it seems As me I miss you and myself Maybe you'll come back As me © by Evan Hause

Flicker 03:02
Flicker Who was standing Here before you Before it was me? I try to catch a glimpse On your face An afterimage on your expression I'm not allowed to ask You're not allowed to tell So we read each other In silence That quick flicker In the corner of your eye Was that you or someone else? Or me? Everyone stays No one goes We all carry the weight Of those we've ever known So me and you Are two lightning poles In the same vast universe Of souls Let's share ourselves and create A momentary flicker That outshines all Briefly. © by Evan Hause

Easy 03:54
Easy Who said lovin' you ain't got its little perks? I didn't need no frills but with you I've got the works I didn't want nobody, ya know I tried to turn my head Now I'm shinin' up my shoes so I can walk with you instead You don't ask for nothin' but you give me everything You're a Queen Bee, baby, and your love is like a sting You give me things I did not know that I would ever need Now I can't go back to those lonely days, I'm yours, yes indeed "What can I do for you today?" you say "Just sit back and let me make your troubles go away." Lovin' you's the easiest thing someone could ever do I could do it in the dark, easy as turning a screw You make the day a game that I can never lose You make the night all choices and I never have to choose You make the Spring a story where I'm in the Pleasure Dome You make the Fall a journey that always leads back home I thought that there'd be trouble holdin' on to someone like you I thought that there'd be hoops-a-plenty for me to jump through But you make lovin' easy as fallin' off a log Your directions are simple as the day is long © by Evan Hause

Straw House 05:00
Straw House There is hollowness in our heads There's a memo on our shelf We've had blues and we've had reds You are sleeping by yourself There is wine in the cellar aging There's a cactus in our house There's a wildfire raging Round our straw house out in Taos There is sunshine on my shoulder There's a flower in your hair Our blanket makes me colder Than the touching that we share There's a jet airliner landing And there's no one left on board The scarecrow is understanding Of the kisses that you hoard Defectors of dubious status Are swarming in like ants They are banging on our lattice They are begging me to dance And as you lie with your armies And I with my defense The in-laws have been swarming To our straw house in Vincennes We are sleeping less than ever Our bed has had no rest Even though my head is severed And chained upon your breast Now as the day is breaking You will find yourself alone There's a head in the oven baking And a memo by the phone At 5 o'clock in the morning Or whenever your day begins There's a high water river warning By our straw house in Vincennes © by Evan Hause

Bachelor 03:19
Bachelor I got hideous wallpaper, spaghetti sauce vapor One pair of shoes and an iron I don't use Flea market tables, wrong address labels An entertainment center, a perennial renter I'm a bachelor, no one comes a-knockin' I'm a bachelor jammin' out to Dokken I come and go as I please, stocked with mac 'n' cheese A hundred old routines, so much time to kill between my job and my sleep, no promises to keep Some candy for my brain, yankin' on my chain I'm a bachelor, no need for me to wed I'm a bachelor, sleepin' sideways on my bed Some nights I'm the life of the party Other nights I sit around just like Marty I'm a bachelor, don't know if I'll marry I'm a bachelor, tryin' not to live like Jerry No one tells me what to think, dirty dishes in my sink Optimistic just like Custer, clean my floor with a Dust Buster Cap'n Crunch every morning, another landlord warning Watchin' porn for a teaser, TV dinners in my freezer I'm a bachelor, some say I'm half a man I'm a bachelor, 'cause I haven't made a plan I'm a bachelor, all my friends are married I'm a bachelor, my tastes are strange and varied Some nights I hit the dance floor just like a dancin' fool Other nights I jam to Ozzy and kick it old school I'm a connoisseur of clever, make my bed, well, never My philosphic view falls between Camus and The Who I've toured the Boone's Farm winery, boast a host of bourgeois finery Start the day with chin-ups, end the day with pin-ups I'm a bachelor, saving quarters for my laundry I'm a bachelor, in another family quandary Some nights I feel the freedom glowing Other nights it's just a cold wind blowing I'm a bachelor, no direction I can see I'm a bachelor, who's lookin' after me? © by Evan Hause

Honor Among Thieves I'll never leave you in the dark We've tripped up too many carts I'll never fire across your bow But I will always take a head start You have to trust me when you can't trust yourself You have to assume that I'm at my best And when I'm trashing rooms with words You have to sit and smile like the rest And when we reach the conclusion About our place in the food chain We'll follow the illusion Color the numbers that make us strange I'm like you, you're like me Sometimes there's no one to believe The truth is in the lies we lead There is honor among thieves © by Evan Hause

Wooden House 10:07
Wooden House There's a wooden house that's on my street It's where we go when we can't take the heat Kicked in a wall just the other day It doesn't matter 'cause the landlord's gone away There's a wooden house that's on my block Belongs to everyone, we don't keep it locked Blew out a window and bashed in a door Nobody cares 'cause that's what it's for We go there when we can't take no more Nobody dares try 'n' fix up the floor We all share it, it's an open sore It's condemned by you It's condemned by them It's condemned by us It's condemned by those Who've turned to rust Who have lost the trust Who have missed the bus There's a wooden house that's in my town We scared the landlord now he don't come around We beat the walls, it was a beautiful sound We'll beat this house right to the fuckin' ground There's a wooden house in my neighborhood When we leave we're always feelin' good Burned out a closet again this afternoon It's alright 'cause we're leavin' there soon We're gonna fly by the light of the moon We're gonna try an' get out by June It's been so long, I think we all know the tune © by Evan Hause

5 Days and 17 Nights When I see a room full of people Twisting and moving hard It reminds me of everything good about you And the things you used to tell me And when I drive all day and all night In my quiet, stolen car I hear what I used to go through I never knew it was about you And when I walk under the cold city lights I'm a soldier just growing older 5 days and 17 nights Is what one hour feels like All these years and I'm bad with names I wish everything didn't seem the same 5 days and 17 nights Is what one hour feels like If I had a soul I would be like you Instead I'm just a ghost who's paying his dues 5 days and 17 nights It's out of my control Now everyone's a wisp And I see through them all ....or maybe it's me that's fading fast I must have crazy to think that I would last Now there's nothing that I haven't seen in my past Nothing changes, nothing's new How could I have known that it was all about you? © by Evan Hause

Okie Dokie 02:45
Okie Dokie Pat on the back, another moment down This is the one they'll talk about for miles and miles around End of the day, a man drives home Turns left at the dead end Takes one look at the setting sun Then hits the trail to nowhere And it's north, south, east or west Who gives a damn? Okie dokie, west it is for the Young Man Park the car, spit into the wind Back in your face, it's no use to pretend Change of clothes, a new haircut Experiment with color A month or two and then move on Tip the man a dollar Or it's two or three or four Who gives a damn? Okie dokie, three it is for the New Man And it's up or down or all around Who cares? Up it is, we'll fly to where The air's so thin you can See past the walls of the Cell you're in And it's blue or pink or green Who gives a damn? Okie dokie, pink it is for the Used Man © by Evan Hause

Now You've Got a Gun Now you've got a gun I could tell that you felt This whole scene was getting mean or at least a little less fun. But you were always a burn. The smiles were guiles, The course seemed forced, But you knew you had a lot to learn. So now you've got a gun You take it to the bake sale, You wave it at the slave trade, I wonder if you've got more than one. 'Cause you were always adding things– Degrees to the temperature, Days on your world tour, Verses to the songs you sing. Who might you shoot first? Your lawyer or your editor, Your daddy or the janitor, Or that gardener that you said was so damn cursed? Now that you've got a gun I guess we've all got to run. Those dancing days are done It's like you're telling everyone You don't want to know who the winner is. You've got your business to attend to And your new friends are packing, too Or at least they know someone who is. Now you've got a gun And it ain't no more fun To play with you, to stay with you To sit out in the sun. And to think that it was my suggestion. Friends can be so cruel I challenge you to a duel You've got a gun and I've got a pucker When I count to one you draw, sucker. © by Evan Hause

Brick House 10:29
Brick House On the south side of a southern town Where September winds can blow a pine tree down A brick house stands, forged with grit and rage A brick house stands against the force of age. Parched white columns and shutters painted black A shallow crick trickles among gardenias out back A mourning dove calls as the sun's going down. The kids were raised during troubled times They kicked and cussed and crossed all the lines, leaving signs Run-of-the-mill, Follow the Leader, King of the Hill, hopeless cheater, Stab in the back, tattle tale Blood brothers, loyalty frail Sworn enemy, sworn to secrecy "Fight, fight, a black and a white" Jumpin' the ditch, payback's a bitch "Four-eyed freak," "Hey, you walkin' kinda light." Ancestral turtle shell picture frames on the wall Old jigsaw puzzles in the chest down the hall One hightop sneaker and a black baseball glove Symbols of growing and a young mother's love A ship in the bottle or a toy sword to wield Things from the time when Time was well-concealed. The old couple keeps different hours and different beds Dementia creeps in to fray the bonds in their heads The memories they shared of everything since they were young Slip away just like their names off the tips of their tongues The old man slips in rivers of shit he can't control The old woman berates him for not standing up tall And he just waves her off, and she just smokes and coughs But every night at ten he comes by her room again For a drink and a kiss goodnight And the strong brick house keeps the night outside the door But it's calling and screeching like a mighty silent roar. The old mantle clock, the sundowner's block The shadows grow long The mourning dove coos, the man takes off his shoes The night settles in She thinks of way back when, all the things that have been And maybe what's to come Somewhere in the fog of old age resides a light Akin to what blind folks might call a second sight We don't really know just what it is until we're there Everyone knows in their way they must prepare. When we are fading and our ancestors waiting Neighbors look on us with sadness or with hope The best you can do is have a strong brick house around you And wait for that thing we call God to throw us a rope. © by Evan Hause

Seems To Be Clear Two children legs entwined on a Park bench in the evening time and I Don't want to disturb them but I Need to move by. The days shine on like endless dreams and they Don't mind if I watch, it seems, but I Need to keep moving so I Might find my way. I never meant to get lost but the Toll bridge was free so I crossed, now it Seems to be clear that life is just a mere Improvisation. Well you could say I never read the news and you could Say I never paid my dues but you Have to admit that I have Searched high and wide. A fine mist in the air as my Shadow falls on the road back there as I Walk into the light as though I Know where I'm going. Strange how I never feel alone Stranger still the love I've always known, now it Seems to be clear that life is just a mere Intoxication. © by Evan Hause

about

"Modern rock of the highest order, co-mingling influences too numerous to count. Hause pivots easily between towering quasi-stadium rock, countrified ballads, cerebral soul tunes, and instrumental passages that evoke Brian Wilson or even Steely Dan, all seasoned with epic guitar licks and stellar musicianship."
-Dave Mandl (World of Echo, WFMU-New Jersey)

"For those of us searching for that rarest of rarities, the true heartfelt American rock song that sounds like an absolute up-to-date heirloom, allow me to introduce Dr. Hoss, whose Dust For Prints LP exhibits a flair for 'classic' that couldn't be more modern. Entirely created and produced by Evan Hause - he plays everything on here and there's a lot on here - this is a cult pop gem in the making. Plus, dude plays a mean guitar."
-Dave Cantrell (Stereo Embers Magazine-Portland, Oregon)

"Faster than a speeding bitrate! More powerful than loco motivator! Able to leap tall genre borders with a single bound! Listen — what's that coming out of those speakers!? It's a composer...it's a performer.....It's....Evan Hause — triple-threat composer/performer/singer who writes some of the most engaging [put genre rock, folk, classical, jazz here_______ ] music that has ever tickled your eardrums. Put some Hause in your house - you won't regret it.
-John Schneider (The Global Village, KPFK-Los Angeles)
----------
Check out the "Three Little Pigs Trilogy" of songs: "Straw House," "Wooden House," and "Brick House." They are oddball, discreet short fables with the house as focal point, the latter two being the longest songs of the album, each over ten minutes in length. In "Straw House", the pigs' flimsy house is a metaphor for a marriage gone toxic. "Wooden House" depicts a stormy place where a group of outcasts apparently unite to gleefully tear the sucker down from the inside out. Don't miss the lengthy instrumental tail that follows the song proper, which calls to mind the Chris Squire solo album, "Fish Out of Water." "Brick House" describes a generation or two of a family living in a Southern home, and essentially spotlights the moral that no structure can withstand either time or the goings on behind its walls.
