A shallow crick trickles among gardenias out back
A mourning dove calls as the sun's going down.

The kids were raised during troubled times
They kicked and cussed and crossed all the lines, leaving signs
Run-of-the-mill, Follow the Leader, King of the Hill, hopeless cheater,
Stab in the back, tattle tale
Blood brothers, loyalty frail
Sworn enemy, sworn to secrecy

Ancestral turtle shell picture frames on the wall
Old jigsaw puzzles in the chest down the hall

Things from the time when Time was well-concealed.

The old couple keeps different hours and different beds

And the strong brick house keeps the night outside the door
But it's calling and screeching like a mighty silent roar.

The old mantle clock, the sundowner's block
The shadows grow long
The mourning dove coos, the man takes off his shoes
The night settles in
She thinks of way back when, all the things that have been
And maybe what's to come

Somewhere in the fog of old age resides a light
Akin to what blind folks might call a second sight
We don't really know just what it is until we're there
Everyone knows in their way they must prepare.

When we are fading and our ancestors waiting
Neighbors look on us with sadness or with hope
The best you can do is have a strong brick house around you
And wait for that thing we call God to throw us a rope.
