Another dark episode, "Bal des Ardents" (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bal_des_Ardents) is a famous true story from Paris in 1393, wherein Charles VI of France and several other members of his house are accidentally burned, most of them to death, at a celebratory ball because their beastly costumes, ill-advisedly made from pitch and feathers, were accidentally set afire in the revelry.

The events of the Bal des Ardents ("Ball of Fire") became the inspiration for Edgar Allen Poe's fictional "Hop-Frog." My musical mini-drama does not strictly adhere to events of either story, but is intended to likewise evoke a tale of hubris and decadence that does not end well. It closes "Side One," or the "Earthly Life" side of the album, with a locked run-out loop.
