about

Hymn to the Lake, while sounding very American and Western, suggests by its title and track placement the legendary "gold dust" ceremony to appoint a new Muisca Chief in the center of Lake Guatavita on a barge made of gold, famously depicted and displayed in a special exhibit in the Museo del Oro in Bogotá [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muisca_raft]:

"According to the legend, the ceremony to appoint the new Muisca Chief used to happen at the centre of this lake. It is said that the new Muisca chief was covered in gold dust and then sailed to the centre of the lake in a wooden raft from which he would subsequently jumped into the water. The raft was loaded with precious treasures that were later thrown into the water as a symbol of adoration to their gods. When the Spaniards came to this territory and heard about the legend of El Dorado, they organised many expeditions to find the gold submerged in the lake, they even attempted to drain the lake but nothing was ever found." [Uncover Colombia - Travel Blog]

But we are also talking about a hymn - something devotional and with very little text. At the supposed first Christian Pentecost there were many languages present - no common tongue. Most people I personally know associate the very word "pentecostal" with an extreme faction of Christians who practice glossolalia, or "speaking in tongues," which hearkens back to the many disparate tongues coming together to worship the same thing.

"Glossolalists claim that these tongues can be both real, unlearned languages as well as a 'language of the spirit', a 'heavenly language', or perhaps the language of angels." - Wikipedia

Musically (and here it gets cheeky, if not a little warped), my Hymn to the Lake emulates Burt Bacharach's "South American Getaway" from the soundtrack to Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid with its jazz, Swingle Singers-like, scat vocals. So, what can I say, my own contrived "language of angels" at the Plastic Island Pentecost has something to do with Ella Fitzgerald.
