Part One of the album ("Side One") is filled with the darker side of earthly life. "Send for the Captain" is one such dark episode, composed on the bass and developed outward to other instruments. I was haunted by the image of sailors toiling in the deepest reaches of the hold of a stricken vessel, being the first ones aware of imminent catastrophe.

This became a metaphor to me of my close proximity to my father's slow demise due to Parkinson's Disease. I recall sitting by my father's bedside near the end of his life as he voiced a dementia-fueled vision of maritime urgency as though sending a Mayday from another world. He had been a casual sailor and I can still hear his weather radio, or ship to ship transmissions with his friends, a sound world all its own. One day near the end while at his quiet bedside I heard him suddenly erupt in his radio voice, telling an imaginary Coast Guard that he was in peril but would be OK.
